About Aviation Marking Coatings
Civil aviation regulations require tall structures — chimneys, transmission towers, wind turbine towers and other elevated obstacles — to carry high-visibility aviation obstacle markings in aviation white and aviation red. These coatings must maintain vivid, stable colour under years of continuous UV exposure, extreme temperature cycling, rain and industrial atmospheric pollution without fading, chalking or peeling. All four products in this series are specified at ≥4 coats to ≥120 μm DFT and are suitable for both steel and concrete substrates.
The series offers four chemistry options to match project requirements: PLS86-4 two-pack polyurethane for maximum hardness, gloss and anti-yellowing performance; PLB83-1 acrylic-silicone for the longest rated service life (10+ years); PLB86-2 thermoplastic acrylic for fast dry, cost-effective marking on standard structures; and PLJB82-81 CR-acrylic for enhanced chemical atmosphere and marine climate resistance where industrial gas exposure is a factor. All products are compatible with galvanised steel when a suitable sealer primer is applied first.
Technical Data: All 4 Aviation Marking Coating Products
All products specified at ≥4 coats to ≥120 μm DFT. Substrate moisture ≤6% required; galvanised steel needs sealer primer before application.

Aviation Marking Coatings — Where They Are Specified
Structure type and atmospheric environment determine product selection — all four products meet the ≥120 μm DFT aviation marking specification requirement.
Steel & Concrete Chimneys
Industrial chimneys at power stations, cement plants and chemical facilities are among the most demanding environments for aviation marking coatings — combining high-temperature flue gas radiation from the stack surface, acid gas fallout and continuous UV exposure. PLB83-1 acrylic-silicone with its 10+ year rated service life is the primary specification for chimney marking where maintenance access is difficult and repainting intervals must be maximised. PLS86-4 two-pack polyurethane is preferred where the highest gloss and anti-yellowing performance is required.
High-Voltage Transmission Towers
Transmission towers in remote and rural locations must carry aviation markings for extended periods with minimal maintenance access. The 10+ year service life of PLB83-1 acrylic-silicone makes it the preferred specification for transmission tower marking where repainting frequency must be minimised. PLJB82-81 CR-acrylic is specified for towers in coastal or industrial locations where chemical atmosphere and marine climate resistance are additionally required.
Power Plant Structures — Chemical & Industrial Atmosphere
Power plant chimneys and structures in industrial zones face combined UV, acid gas and chemical atmosphere exposure. PLJB82-81 CR-acrylic marking paint provides enhanced resistance to chemical atmospheres and marine climates while maintaining the vivid aviation red and white colouration required by civil aviation regulations. PLB86-2 thermoplastic acrylic is the cost-effective option for standard power plant chimney marking in moderate atmospheric conditions.
Galvanised Steel Structures
All four aviation marking products in this series are suitable for application on galvanised steel structures — but require application of a specialist sealer primer over the galvanised surface before the marking coat system is applied. This ensures adequate inter-coat adhesion between the zinc surface and the marking paint film. Substrate moisture must be ≤6% for all products regardless of substrate type.
